We aim to raise awareness in our local area of the issues faced by asylum-seekers in Australia and its overseas detention centres in Nauru and Papua New Guinea.
Although the last refugee has left Australia’s much-criticised offshore detention centre on Nauru, the Federal Government has no plans to close the facility, writes Dr Binoy Kampmark.
Their evacuation from Kabul airport followed a campaign by Popal and a group of activists β including former Socceroos captain Craig Foster, former Matildas vice-captain Moya Dodd and human rights lawyer Alison Battison β to get the national team out of Afghanistan.
Calls are growing louder for Canberra to bring all refugees – who had sought asylum in Australia but were detained offshore – into the country for medical treatment and processing….But Australia does not plan on ending its offshore detention deal with Nauru anytime soon.
